Glossary of Terms

We know you may be confused by some of the terms used on the site, we got you covered! We hope the following list of terms helps.

  • Cognate: Used to describe a person who has studied a property/real estate degree accredited with a professional body (eg, RICS, RTPI, RIBA)

  • Non-cognate: A person who has a non-accredited degree

  • APC: Assessment of Professional Competency. This is the terminology both the RICS and RTPI use in order to assess whether candidates have the technical knowledge and experience, as well as professional standards and ethics, relevant and to that of a high enough standard to be recognised as a chartered member of the relevant body

  • RICS: Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors, the professional body for surveyors

  • RTPI: Royal Town Planners Institute, the professional body for planners

  • RIBA: Royal Institute of British Architects, the professional body for architects
