Career Profile: Registered Valuer
Name: Tony Rosenthal
Job Title: Registered Valuer
I work in the Business Rates team in Glasgow and I am a MRICS qualified surveyor, holding Registered Valuer status. Business Rates are effectively council tax for businesses.
My job enables me to travel the length and breadth of Scotland, from the border with England to the Highlands and Islands. I have recently undertaken business rates appeals for a variety of subjects with the largest rateable values in the country to include, Glasgow Airport and SSE’s wind farm portfolio with total rateable values in excess of £70 million.
My day to day job necessitates the submission and negotiation of business rates appeals across a variety of subjects from Airports to Zoos and everything in between. Every day of my working life is different, whilst being continually tested to improve my knowledge across a wide range of property sectors. The job is rewarding as I am not only seeing parts of the country that I wouldn’t get to see with any other career, but I am also able to advise some of the largest companies located in Scotland on their business rates liabilities at the same time as achieving them substantial savings across their portfolios.
I left School a year earlier than most in Scotland, having achieved the necessary highers to gain a place on the Property Management and Valuation course at Glasgow Caledonian University in my 5th school year. Having considered a career in business/sports I took highers in English, Business Management, Accounting and Physical Education only to switch my career choice following a week’s work experience in a surveyors firm at the age of 16.
