Agency Surveyor

Also known as a “Commercial Surveyor” or “Agent”

An agency surveyor buys or sells property and land on behalf of occupiers (also known as tenants) or landlords. You might hear this role called a commercial surveyor or an agent too. You’d like this job if you enjoy working with a variety of people, being out and about as well as in the office, problem-solving, and marketing – amongst other things!

Agency surveyors are sort of like a go-between to take the hassle off the client’s hands. They also lease property on behalf of landlords to help them get the most out of it, and they help occupiers find property that meets their needs.

Agency surveyors work across many different sectors within property. So you could be dealing with the traditional retail, industrial and office markets, or you might focus on alternative sectors such as hotel and leisure sites, woodland, and hospitals. Your job would include:

Advising clients on buying and selling investments (land, buildings, etc.)
Buying land and getting funding
Negotiating contract terms for landlords and tenants
Making sure tenants are keeping to the conditions of their agreement

Career paths into this role

Apprentice route
You could qualify as an Agency Surveyor whilst working in a supporting role. You study alongside your practical experience

Graduate route
You’ll need an RICS (Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors) accredited undergraduate or postgraduate degree. You’ll usually need 5 GCSEs (9-4) and 3 A Levels to get onto a degree course, but you might be able to use other qualifications.
